What is Autism?

According to the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, Autism is a complex biological disorder of development.  It will last throughout a person’s lifetime.  It affects a person’s ability to communicate and interact with others.  It is a “spectrum” disorder, which means no two individuals are affected the same way.  If you’ve seen ONE child with autism, you’ve seen ONE child with autism.  The symptoms can range from mild to severe.  It can affect anyone, regardless of race, ethnicity, economic status or sex.  It does occur more frequently in males, however.  Currently, there is no known cause or cure for Autism, but early diagnosis and intervention leads to improved outcomes. According to the CDC, (Center for Disease Control) about 1:110 children will be diagnosed with autism.  It is the fastest growing developmental disability.  We can reduce costs of caring for a child with autism by about 2/3 by early diagnosis.
